Assembly Instructions for Babe’s Fiber Starter and Babe’s Production Spinning Machine

Set base on floor with PVC Tee pointing up

Assemble wheel by inserting the attached Upright with the label up. Line up the black marks on the shaft with those of the base Tee. You need to push down on the Upright and might need assistant of a block of wood or hammer.

Assemble maiden with flyer to top of Upright and line up black marks by the screw holes.

Screw in the screws (attach to this sheet) in the two Tees.

Hang drive belt on Maiden then put treadle or treadles through drive band, put it on the wheel and in the grove on the bobbin.

Assemble the treadle or treadles to the base by snapping the fitting unto the base between the two screws. If you remove the treadle from the base be sure to lift on the fitting white tilting the treadle up and off. For double treadle connect the R treadle to the right side of base

    Bobbin Lead

Make sure the leather brake goes over the brass orifice tube between the flyer and the orifice bearing and the hooks are attaches to the loops. This is what controls how the yarn is pulled onto the bobbin. Start out loose and tighten until it pulls in to suit you. Please also read Babe’s Function Information on the back of this page.

    Flyer Lead

Make sure the drive band goes over the whorl on the flyer.  The wonder tension goes over the end of the flange of the bobbin and is adjusted by tightening to the Velcro on the maiden.

The lazy kates are the wood dowels that go in the holes on the side of the base when you ply. To keep them in place on the bottom stretch a rubber band across the two ends of the dowels

OIL the following places. The brass orifice tube where it turns on the PVC bearing and where the ends of the bobbins turn. Also keep the top of the leather brake oiled where it goes over the brass tube. If the Rodman or Treadle squeaks give them a couple of drops of oil. The bearing in the wheel do not need oil

Always make sure the bobbins turn very freely on the flyer when you put on a new one. This also a good time to oil the bobbin.

    Relax and have fun spinning.
