Katie Meek - Penny film canister tension system

Hi Nels,

I just prepared some photos and information on the penny-tension method I use on my Babe, to send to your customer Diana St Clair,
and thought you might be interested.  I have included a couple pictures of the travel jacket I've made for my Babe.  It attaches by Velcro straps and has pockets to hold my spare penny can, the pedal, the inverter, a ball of roving, and an extension cord.  I do most of my spinning in the car (NOT while driving) and find the travel jacket very convenient for toting, then just open the top flaps, plug and spin.

I replaced the Velcro band with a length of linen rug warp (cotton twine would work too) tied to the left side of the frame, and on the other end, where it can hang free, a film can into which I put pennies.  I usually start with about 11 pennies for weight.  When it stops drawing-in to my satisfaction, I add 4-6 pennies and proceed.  repeating the addition of weight as needed until the bobbin is filled.  To ball-off the bobbin, I reduce the pennies to 3 for only mild resistance to the bobbin.

I made a harness of nylon yarn.  I made two small holes at opposite sides of the lid and two more through the bottom of the film can.  The yarn harness is a permanent, loose loop through those 4 holes that allows me to remove the lid from the film can for adding or subtracting pennies, but does not get lost.

Hope this finds you well,
Kati Reeder Meek
